Matt Mowrer was originally billed to work on the SyFy show, but when the opportunity came knocking for him to shift gears and start working on the Defiance game, he just couldn't turn down that creative opportunity.
In the latest 'Meet the Dev' series on Trion Worlds' website, we get the chance to meet Matt and learn more about what inspires him as a writer on Defiance.
Mowrer is a self-professed horror fan and, while Defiance doesn't exactly fit into the horror genre, he loves the creation process in general. Whether it's trying to improve the questionable reputation of horror films or helping shape the amazing story in Defiance, Mowrer is at home when his creative muscles are being worked to their fullest.
Our favorite snippet from the interview was Matt discussing the shift from working as a creative consultant at SyFY to helping shape the story in Defiance. Most of the characters and story details were in place when Matt arrived, he was able to bring his expertise to molding it into something tangible.
I came from the show, actually. I was a creative consultant with Syfy, then this job opened up and offered more creativity.
That first job was half creativity and then half sort of managing details like meetings and emails. This is a hundred percent creative, which is great. The difficult part is just the differences about how each team goes about doing things. For instance, there are limitations that Syfy has that we don’t, and there are roadblocks that we have that they don’t. It’s hard to take all those limitations and create something awesome out of them.
It’s been going really well. I saw the teaser trailer today from the show and it looks amazing. So I was very, very stoked to see that. I think there are going to be some good connections between the two. I think this is going to be pretty rad for people.
